BEWARE: SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF CANCER

Cancer is a group of diseases that can cause almost any sign or symptom.

The signs and symptoms will depend on :

• Where the cancer is
• How big the tumor is
• How much it affects the organs or tissues nearby
• If a cancer has spread (metastasized), signs or symptoms may appear in different parts of the body. As a cancer grows, it can begin to push on nearby organs, blood vessels, and nerves. This pressure also may cause some of the signs and symptoms of cancer.                   

• If the cancer is in a critical area with limited space, such as certain parts of the brain, even the smallest tumor can cause symptoms. But sometimes cancer starts in places where it does not cause any signs or symptoms until it has grown quite large.

We need to know some of the general signs and symptoms of cancer: 

BUT REMEMBER THAT HAVING ANY OF THESE DOES NOT MEAN THAT ONE HAS CANCER , – many other things can also cause these signs and symptoms.

But if you have any of these symptoms and they last for a long time or get worse, please see a doctor to find out what’s going on.

• Unexplained weight loss
• Fever/ night sweats
• Fatigue
• Unexplained bleeding from any site.
• Persistent pain
• Skin changes
• Change in bowel habits or bladder function
• Sores that do not heal
• White patches inside the mouth or white spots on the tongue
• Unusual bleeding or discharge
• Thickening or lump in the breast or other parts of the body
• Indigestion or trouble swallowing
• Recent change in a wart or mole or any new skin change
• Nagging cough or hoarseness
• Persistent headache with vomiting or vision disturbance.
• Post menopausal bleeding.
• Black stools.

So if you have above symptoms for a long time then do get your self checked.

BOOKS THAT SHOW US THE OTHER SIDE OF CANCER !

When you suffer with a chronic disease which is terminable  in most cases , is that all what your life becomes - A disease ? But these heart-touching stories tell us otherwise. Yes, cancer is dark but these novels tell us stories that show us the other side of cancer . Stories of love , happiness , strength and a will to fight . Stories that choose to exist on the periphery of cancer , intertwined with it yet emerging out as their own separate entities . Here are a few such novels :

• Before I Die

                           

 Jenny Downham’s  Tessa is one of the most inspiring characters one could read . When she comes to knowledge of the fact that she is left with a few weeks , she doesn’t give into the cruel game of life but makes her own list of things she wants to do. Not leaving anything out of modesty , Sex tops her list . This novel is a journey of Tessa’s life and her struggle to go on .

• My Sister’s Keeper

                                      

This novel is a compelling story of a family and primarily of two sisters , one who suffers from cancer(Kate)  and the other who was born to save her(Anna) .
By age thirteen, Anna has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. Kate loves her sister immensely and doesn’t want Anna to suffer on her behalf and thus releases Anna from the role of saving her . It Is Kate’s strength to take life as it comes , her selfless love and her attempt to live whatever life she is left with , that is truly touching .

• The Fault In Our Stars

                                    

This novel is a journey . You cannot undo its effect , it just stays with you . Hazel is no normal teenager , her life is enclosed by tubes ,medicines and a tumor that wouldn’t go away . Just when she met Augustus Waters , her story is about to be completely rewritten . This touching love story which already knew its ending as it bloomed, is so magical. You cannot help but feel their helplessness and yet that determined streak to not let cancer take its toll on their love.

• The Probability Of Miracles

                                      

Dry, sarcastic, sixteen-year-old Cam Cooper has spent the last seven years in and out hospitals. The last thing she wants to do in the short life she has left is move 1,500 miles away to Promise, Maine - a place known for the miraculous events that occur there. But it's undeniable that strange things happen in Promise: everlasting sunsets; purple dandelions; flamingos in the frigid Atlantic; an elusive boy named Asher; and finally, a mysterious envelope containing a list of things for Cam to do before she dies. As Cam checks each item off the list, she finally learns to believe - in love, in herself, and even miracles.



All these novels have one thing in common – Magic that they create . They touch your soul , wrench your heart and gives you a different outlook on life altogether. They tell you there is more to Cancer and the people suffering from it. Hopes , dreams , love and aspirations  still choose to stay.
