Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer that affects the blood stem cells. It is a rapid-growing cancer of the blood and the bone marrow. In AML, the white blood cells (WBCs) do not develop completely but multiply in large number. These immature WBCs crowd the bone marrow, preventing it from making normal red blood cells and platelets that body needs. This causes the body lose its immunity and making more it vulnerable to disease.

Causes and Risk factors:

It happens when the DNA of the developing cells in bone marrow is damaged but the cause for this damage is unknown.
There are some factors which may increase your chances in getting AML.

Please note that having one or more risk factors does not mean you will 100% get AML. People with no such factors have also developed AML. The following is only a guide to say what may cause and may lower the risk of developing.

  • Smoking: The most common cause for any cancer is smoking. It increases the chances by double or triple but decreases if you stop it.

  • Chemotherapy: Patients who have had the treatment for chemotherapy have slightly increased risk that may lead to AML many years later. The risk chance decreases as time passes since the treatment.

  • Electromagnetic Radiation: There are some studies which show that exposure to high levels of EMR may increase the risk. This is not conclusive as the cause might not be the exposure but some other factor because very few people are exposed to high level of radiation.

  • Blood disorders: People with the blood disorder are most likely to develop AML than people without the disorder.

Treatment for AML:

The most typical treatment is chemotherapy. For some patients this treatment alone may bring long term remission where the patient is symptom free. But for others this may not suffice. These patients might need a bone marrow transplant in their early stage for a long-term remission or probably a cure.

Some of the patients of our support group have provided valuable information regarding the treatment for AML. It is as follows-

  1. Positive feedback on BLK Super Specialty Hospital, New Delhi.Name of the doctor-Dr Dharma director of Haemato Oncology.
  2. One of our member’s parent has successfully undergone bone marrow transplant from Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre. The hospital also helps the patients in getting a match from the registries for stem cell transplant.
  3. Tata Medical Center(TMC),Kolkatta  and Tata memorial Hospital(TMH), Mumbai are also a good option.

The above feedback is given by the members of our patients support community. Please take your choice wisely after reading

Feedback on Dr Yeshi by Yoddhas:

Most of our patients believe in his treatment while some are completely against it. A very famous music director late Mr. Aadesh Shrivastava was undergoing treatment by Dr. Yeshi Dhonden at Kokilaben hospital after his cancer relapsed for the third time.
One follower says that Delhi/Mumbai's doctors gave his father a maximum time frame of 3 months while he tried the treatment of Dr. Yeshi. He is under his supervision for 10 months now and still doing well. Ayurveda and chemo can go hand in hand along with his medication but a big no to homoeopathy.

Common Side effects:

Patients have complained of a few side effects after they were introduced to Dr. Yeshi's medications. The side effects are not permanent and seemed to fade away within a week.
The side effects included an upset stomach or diarrhea lasting for about 3 to 4 days after which the conditions become normal. Few patients have also complained of having a feeling of tiredness and sleepiness for the initial first week of the intake of the prescribed medicines.

These are very common side effects and is nothing serious as such. If the conditions persists the patients should contact a doctor or Dr. Yeshi himself to get a solution to the problems.

DRY MOUTH REMEDIES

Dry mouth or Xerostomia is the condition where the mouth is dry as a result of reduced saliva production by the salivary glands. Dry mouth is often considered as a side effect of medication.Saliva prevents tooth decay and also washes off the neutralizing acids produced by bacteria, so when there is a reduction in the saliva level, tooth decay becomes one of the major issues. The level of this can range from a mere discomfort to a serious impact on the teeth and also result in a reduced appetite.

What Causes a Dry Mouth?

Chemotherapy or any radiation treatment damage the salivary glands and make them thicker in size which eventually leads to a dry mouth. This symptom is temporary which clears up about two-eight weeks after the treatment ends.
Therapy directed to face, neck or head also causes dry mouth. It can take eight months or more for the salivary glands to recover and start excreting saliva at the normal rate after the completion of the treatment.

Ways to prevent a dry mouth:

This effect is temporary and cannot be avoided but there are few tips on managing the dry mouth.

  • Brushing your teeth after each meal with soft-bristle tooth brush and use fluoride toothpaste. You can also soak your brush in warm water to make it softer.

  • DO NOT SMOKE OR CHEW TOBACCO as it further makes your mouth dry.

  • Moisten your mouth by taking sips of water very often in a day.

  • Avoid spicy food and alcohol containing dental products as they will burn your mouth.

  • Rinse your mouth after very meal with salt and baking soda. A solution of half a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of baking soda mixed in one cup of lukewarm water is proven to be very helpful.

Tips from other Cancer fighters:

Dry mouth is often faced by many Cancer fighters as it is a side effect of radiation and chemotherapy. Here are some tips from them which are authentic and are based on purely their personal experiences.
  • Use Betadin Gargel product for mouthwash and do it frequently in a day.
  • Use anti-sensitivity toothpaste such as Sensodyne,Rapid Relief or Vantej.
  • Gargle with baking soda couple of times in day.
  • Avoid using toothpicks and use a soft-bristle toothpaste
  • Baking soda and warm saline rinses is very helpful.
  • Clogen lozenge product is also very helpful.
