YOGA FOR A HEALTHY LIVING,YOGA FOR CANCER

Yoga is the practice of creating unity between mind and body. When there's a disconnect between mind and body, our lives move out of balance, causing stress, fatigue and ultimately, illness. When you unify your mind and body through yoga, the reverse occurs. Your body can start to heal and re-balance naturally, helping you to feel healthier, happier and more alive.

Here are a few reasons that yoga helps you heal:
1. Yoga brings attention to your breathing, which is the single most important thing that you do every day.
2. Yoga is a spiritual practice that allows your mind to soften and your heart to open.It can bring your awareness to the tension being held in your body, so that you can let it go.
3. Yoga can help you stay connected to yourself. Its a great way to know what is important for your body and soul.
4. Yoga can help you to gain clarity about things you're working through each day.
5. Yoga can help you move beyond a negative inner-dialogue.
6. Balance poses in yoga invite you to get out of your head and into your body.. There are lots of different styles and levels of yoga allowing you to find the best 'fit' for you
7. Yoga gives you healing tools to better cope with stressful events and trauma.
8. Yoga re-balances your body and can help with weight loss, Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), inflammation and other chronic ailments.
9. Yoga classes are a great way to meet new, interesting and like-minded people.
10. Creating a regular yoga practice can bring more flexibility and strength to your body. the twists in yoga can help you feel stronger and better able to cope with life's unexpected turns.
11. Yoga supports you to consciously make better and healthier food choices.
12. Yoga opens you up to new feelings like inspiration, joy and gratitude.

YOGA AND CANCER:

There is no assurance that yoga will cure cancer; however, it may make cancer and its treatment more bearable, both physically and emotionally.
Cancer patients are discovering that yoga offers both an accessible form of exercise and a path to mental clarity that is a welcome addition during and after treatment.

For cancer patients, the breathing and meditative aspects of the practice can create much needed clarity and peace, while the poses themselves provide a beneficial form of exercise during treatment.

As one of the steps on Patanjali’s eight-step path of yoga, pranayama has been practiced by yogis for thousands of years as a way to quiet the mind and tap into the subtle, energetic realms of the body. Prana is a Sanskrit term for the vital life force that animates all things; ayama translates as extension or elongation. Pranayama enables the practitioner to access prana and connect with the vast energetic network of the subtle body by controlling and playing with the flow of breath.
Current research has shown that beyond these subtle effects, pranayama has numerous observable health benefits. Several studies provide evidence that yogic breathing exercises help to induce a relaxed state by enhancing the action of the parasympathetic nervous system (otherwise known as the “rest-and-digest response”).

Researchers at the University of California – San Francisco investigated how the health benefits of pranayama specifically apply to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
The study had two aims:
1. To determine whether it’s feasible for patients undergoing chemotherapy to practice pranayama
2. To gauge the effect of pranayama on common chemotherapy-associated symptoms (fatigue, sleep disturbance, stress, anxiety, depression) and quality of life (QOL)
The researchers concluded that pranayama is appropriate, beneficial, and can be safely recommended for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Further study in this area will hopefully offer even more definitive evidence of pranayama’s efficacy.

Below are instructions for the four breathing techniques taught to and practiced by patients in the study.

1. BREATH OBSERVATION:
Sit or lie in a comfortable position. Breathe naturally. Avoid forcing, controlling or manipulating your breath. Shift your attention to your breath. Simply observe and experience it without any judgment. You might notice the soft whispering sound the breath creates; how long or short the breath is; how deep or shallow it feels; or where in your body you feel the breath most noticeably. At certain points during this practice, you might notice that your mind is no longer focused on the breath. When this happens, acknowledge that the mind has wandered and gently guide it back to the breath.

2. UJJAYI (Victoriously Uprising Breath):
Sit or lie in a comfortable position. Keeping the mouth closed, inhale and exhale through the nose. Partially close the glottis (the opening between the vocal folds) by slightly constricting the muscles at the back of the throat. The action in these muscles should feel the same as when you exhale your breath onto a mirror to create fog. As the muscles contract, you’ll begin to notice that your breath creates a soft whispering sound similar to the sound of the ocean. Continue to create this sound with the breath and find a steady rhythm, breathing in for the same amount of time that you breathe out.
KAPALBHATTI* (Skull Shining Breath)

Sit comfortably in an upright position and bring your attention to your lower belly. It can be helpful to rest one or two hands on the belly below the navel. Breathe in deeply then exhale completely. Inhale about halfway; then begin a series of short, sharp exhalations by pumping the abdomen. After forcing the air out by contracting the abdomen, release the belly and passively inhale. Repeat this several times. Start with however many breath cycles (one inhale and one exhale) you can comfortably do, then relax and breathe normally. Gradually over time, increase the number of cycles.
*Kapalabhati is not recommended if you are pregnant or suffer from high or low blood pressure, glaucoma, cardiac issues, or hernia.

3. NADI SHODHANA (Alternate Nostril Breath):

Sit comfortably in an upright position. Spread the fingers of the right hand. Create Vishnu Mudra by curling the right index and middle fingers in towards the palm, while the thumb, ring finger and pinky remain extended. Hold the right hand just beside the nose as you take a deep breath in through both nostrils. Close the right nostril with the thumb then exhale through the left. Inhale through the left, close both nostrils by lightly touching the ring finger to the left nostril and the thumb to the right. Lift the thumb and exhale through the right nostril. Inhale through the right nostril, close both, then lift the ring finger and exhale through the left. Continue for several cycles of breath.

BELIEVE in yourself and go wisely. If you are detected with Cancer in early stages then follow the precautions and rules and see the magic of your spiritualism and yoga. Take care and live well!

DARK SKIN AND LIGHT HAIR- SUMMER IS HERE

There are seasons and then there is summer season (like a boss!). Uncle sunny is already knocking on the door so before the degree reaches a notch higher and get better of you here are some tips for summer to stay cool for your otherwise cool self:

1) Avoid Excess Sun Exposure:
It’s proven that sunrays are most harmful between 10am to 3pm.
So try to avoid going out during this time and if you really have to go make sure you have spf in place.

2) Stay Hydrated:
Yes! Mommy was right! Getting enough fluids (Read:water) can actually keep you cool during summer. Excessive sweating during summers can dehydrate your body so sipping water throughout the day is the best and calorie free option for you and adding lemon to it can help you replenish lost minerals.

3) Old Is Gold:
When the heat is too much to bear, our desi and natural drinks come to our rescue. So ditch the cold drinks and go Desi. I mean who can resist a freshly prepared, chilled, brimming glass of home made nimbu paani. And the satiating and refreshing effect of nariyal paani can’t be explained in words!! The grandmother special aam panna is just nothing less than legendary. You can even try green tea which is a good source of antioxidants and can help reverse the cell damage done by the sun.

4) Wake up fresh:
Start your day with a juicy, fresh fruit and try to have small frequent meals throughout the day instead of three large meals. Make sure to include seasonal fruits and veggies in your diet like cucumber, melons, peaches and plum.
*Try to limit your red meat intake during summer.

5) Wear Breathable Fabrics:
Go easy on clothes and wear long sleeved, light coloured cotton clothes instead of synthetics. Cotton can absorb sweat and make you feel cooler and protect you from harmful sunrays.

Pressure points:

You may have heard it before, there are certain spots on our body which can help you cool off almost instantly. The reason for this is there are pulse points, i.e. areas where you can feel your pulse like neck and wrists because blood vessels are near to the skin surface and that’s the very reason it helps to cool your body.
Although neck is the most effective area there are other spots like your wrists, insides of elbows and knees along with tops of your feet and insides of your ankle.
Tying damp bandanna or scarf around your wrist, elbow and neck(when you can) is an easy way to keep cool.

Not Cool:

While there are plenty of tips to stay cool during summers there are few tips that should be avoided:

  • Avoid carbonated, aerated soft drinks as they do nothing good to your body. They are empty calories you don’t need. Go natural.
  • Keep caffeine and alcohol at bay. While you may love your morning coffee/tea but these may cause dehydration and induce hot flashes. You may try green tea or chamomile tea.
  • Go COOL and not COLD. Use ice wrapped in towel instead of simply ice.
  • Instead of ice cream try a wedge of watermelon.
  • If you have gone through chemo, try wearing a breathable cotton scarf instead of wigs.
  • If you decide to go for wigs make sure its light weight synthetic wig.

FRUITS TO THE RESCUE: EATING IT RIGHT

Cancer- this malicious evil needs to be eliminated from the society as soon as possible. The elimination is no rocket science instead it can be very well done by following the right procedure and maintaining a tactful routine. Fruits are said to be one of the most important constituent of our diet.
Tips that you need to follow:

1. Eating fruits on an empty stomach

Fruits detoxify your system, supply you with energy and also keep your weight in check. If not eaten on an empty stomach, the fruit will get mixed with the putrefying of other food and produce gas and hence making you all the more weak and unhealthy.

2. Drink only fresh fruit juices.

Stop having those aerated drinks and those tinned or packed food or fruit juices. Have fresh fruit juices instead of cooked fruits as they contain more vitamins. Though we would always suggest you to eat a whole fruit than drinking its juice.

3. Say No to cold water

Please avoid drinking cold water or drinks after a meal because it considerably slows down your digestion. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

Fruits that should be included in your regular diet:

KIWI :

Kiwi is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin C and E and fiber.

APPLE:

Apple has antioxidants and flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thus helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY :

Strawberry has the highest antioxidant power and protects the body from cancer-causing and blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE :

Orange helps in keeping cold away, lowers cholesterol, prevents & dissolves kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON :

Watermelon is packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which boosts our immune system.

GUAVA :

Guava is known for its high vitamin C content. Moreover, guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation.

PAPAYA :

Papaya is rich in Vitamin C and carotene which is good for your eyes.

Follow these simple and effective rules because they are your master keys toward leading a happier and stable life.

CANCER MYTHS DEBUNKED

In today's so called 4g generation ‘Jo gol nahi hai', to every question however weird it may seem, internet is awashed with answers. But when it comes to healthcare the information is either outdated, not upto the mark or even worse misleading and far from authentic. When we talk about issues like cancer, which is one of the most dreaded word, it's important to break myths which are rooted in old theories and communication is the most important aspect to remove the cancer related stigma.
So below are most prevalent 8 myths about cancer busted:

1. Cancer- a death sentence

Truth: Death is inevitable- don't we all know that? But hey! Cancer=death is not necessary. Today, medical science has come a long way and so has treatment of cancer. It definitely depends upon individual patient's lifestyle and other factors like stage and type of cancer but quality of life of cancer patients has improved.

2. Having sugar will worsen your cancer

Truth: Ok, let us get that straight, there is no scientific evidence that if you have cancer, eating sugar is going to harm you in anyway. Of Course, you are what you eat and it does affect your cancer risk but, eliminating all types of sugar(including natural sugars in fruits) will harm normal cells because they too require glucose to function and no, your not eating sugar will not shrink or affect your tumor anyway. So no need to ditch that sweet tooth yet! But having said above, one should reduce sugar in the diet.

3. Cancer is contagious

Truth: No! It's NOT contagious. You can't “catch” cancer from someone suffering from it by any sort of physical contact with them or breathing in the same air or sharing meals with them, except in rare cases of organ transplant wherein the donor has a history of cancer.

4. Cancer is hereditary

Truth: Research says only 5-10% of cancers can be inherited so it's not necessary if you have a family history of cancer you will suffer from it too and also it does not mean if you do not have a family history of cancer you will not suffer from it.

5. Only females suffer from breast cancer

Truth: Albeit, women are more likely to suffer from breast cancer that does not mean men can't suffer from it. Males too have breast tissue and they also suffer from breast cancer but breasts in males are not developed due to different hormones in males and females so chances are less.

6. Use of antiperspirants/deodorants causes breast cancer

Truth: According to scientific studies so far, no relation has been found between use of antiperspirants/deo and changes in cells of breast.

7. All cancers are same/cancer patients receive same kind of treatments

Truth: FALSE! There are over 100 types of cancer discovered and even if the cancer is of same type the treatments are tailored specifically for each patients depending upon location, stage and genes of individual patients. We all are different, right?

8. Cancer is extremely painful

Truth: Now that may sound true but no, not all people with cancer experience pain. It may be a side effect or symptom of cancer but it can be treated with certain medications and now a days there is a special type of care unit known as the palliative care which relieves side effects and symptoms of cancer.
So! Cancer does not necessarily have to be painful.

9. Cancer causes hair loss.

Truth: Cancer  does not causes hair loss but its treatment does . Yes, you heard it right. Chemo drugs are powerful medicines which kills rapidly growing cells which are present in our body.

Unfortunately, they cannot differentiate between the good cells and the bad cells so in this process they end up killing the good cells too which includes the one which are responsible for our hair growth.

These were some of the most common myths about cancer but there are many more myths which need to be taken care of!

 What to do?

First, and the foremost stop consulting Dr Google because Hey! Half knowledge is even dangerous than ignorance. There are many websites which lack credential information and are misleading. So it's better to take help from healthcare specialists and authentic sources. Lastly, stay positive and smile often!

Causes of cancer and Treatment Prevention of Cancer with Giloy:

Cancer starts with the damage in your DNA. DNA tells your cells how to grow and divide. Normal cells also suffer damage in their DNA but either they are able to repair themselves or they die. But there are certain damages that cannot be repaired. This causes the cells to grow and such cells become cancerous. The mutations also increase the life of the affected cells and they live beyond their normal life span. This causes the accumulation of the cancerous cells.
Many studies have now established that about 80 to 90 percent of cancer in humans is caused due to environmental factors. Some of the important factors contributing to cancer are smoking, infectious diseases, diet, chemicals and presence of radiation near the places of our residence or work.
Giloy is an Indian herb which has been used since ages by the masters of Ayurveda for the treatment of various diseases including cancer. It is said to increase the life of the human beings by preventing the body from many disease. It is antihelminthic, anti periodic, anti arthritic, blood purifier, anti pyretic, digestive, carminative and expectorant. It gives strength to the heart and is an excellent diuretic.
Recent studies have confirmed that the fresh juice of the plant is very beneficial in the treatment and prevention of cancer. The important chemical compounds found in the plant are tinosporin, palmarin, tinosporon, tinosporol, perberillin, berberine and heptaconsoltinosporic acid. The fresh stem bark contains giloinin, giloin and gilosterol. But recently phenolic lignin and hypoglycemia agent have also been isolated from the plant. The above bio active phytochemicals have been found to have ability to prevent various diseases including cancer and other immunological disorders.
Based on the historical evidence of the use of Giloy or Tinospora in the treatment of various diseases including cancer and in the light of the recent researches many studies have been done to verify the claim that the fresh plant juice cures and prevents cancer including the liver cancer.
Though more scientific studies are required but the studies so far have revealed the anti cancer and radio protective activities of the herb. The encouraging results only support the wisdom of the ancient masters of Ayurveda.
It is used in cancer prevention, cancer treatment support, high cholesterol and liver protection. It is used as strong anti-aging factor. It has been used to treat convalescence from severe illness, arthritis, food allergies and anemia. According to some herbalists, Tinospora has adaptogen effects, a term that indicates it helps the body to adopt to stress. In children it is used in general debility, digestive disturbance, loss of appetite and fever.Giloy is popular for its role in cancer and even many trials are going on for its immunomodulatory capacity in treatment of AIDS patients.

How to use Giloy in Cancer:

Taking 500 mg to 1000 mg dosage, twice daily in case of cancers. In case of blood impurities, skin diseases, gout, the dosage can be 500 mg twice daily Buy 200 gram Giloy sat and make 400 equal dosages and wrap them in paper to make sachets. Each sachet will contain about 500 mg powder. Consume 1 sachet twice daily or 2 sachets twice daily.

In recent years many Indian herbs that have been used since long for various medicinal purposes, have received considerable attention and various scientific studies have been made on them. These medicinal herbal plants contain many phytochemicals like vitamins, terpenoids, carotenoids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids, enzyms and minerals etc. All these phytochemicals have antioxidant properties which help in the treatment of many diseases including cancer.
Giloy is one such medicinal plant which helps in the treatment of cancer, perhaps the most important genetic diseases.
