DARK SKIN AND LIGHT HAIR- SUMMER IS HERE

There are seasons and then there is summer season (like a boss!). Uncle sunny is already knocking on the door so before the degree reaches a notch higher and get better of you here are some tips for summer to stay cool for your otherwise cool self:

1) Avoid Excess Sun Exposure:
It’s proven that sunrays are most harmful between 10am to 3pm.
So try to avoid going out during this time and if you really have to go make sure you have spf in place.

2) Stay Hydrated:
Yes! Mommy was right! Getting enough fluids (Read:water) can actually keep you cool during summer. Excessive sweating during summers can dehydrate your body so sipping water throughout the day is the best and calorie free option for you and adding lemon to it can help you replenish lost minerals.

3) Old Is Gold:
When the heat is too much to bear, our desi and natural drinks come to our rescue. So ditch the cold drinks and go Desi. I mean who can resist a freshly prepared, chilled, brimming glass of home made nimbu paani. And the satiating and refreshing effect of nariyal paani can’t be explained in words!! The grandmother special aam panna is just nothing less than legendary. You can even try green tea which is a good source of antioxidants and can help reverse the cell damage done by the sun.

4) Wake up fresh:
Start your day with a juicy, fresh fruit and try to have small frequent meals throughout the day instead of three large meals. Make sure to include seasonal fruits and veggies in your diet like cucumber, melons, peaches and plum.
*Try to limit your red meat intake during summer.

5) Wear Breathable Fabrics:
Go easy on clothes and wear long sleeved, light coloured cotton clothes instead of synthetics. Cotton can absorb sweat and make you feel cooler and protect you from harmful sunrays.

Pressure points:

You may have heard it before, there are certain spots on our body which can help you cool off almost instantly. The reason for this is there are pulse points, i.e. areas where you can feel your pulse like neck and wrists because blood vessels are near to the skin surface and that’s the very reason it helps to cool your body.
Although neck is the most effective area there are other spots like your wrists, insides of elbows and knees along with tops of your feet and insides of your ankle.
Tying damp bandanna or scarf around your wrist, elbow and neck(when you can) is an easy way to keep cool.

Not Cool:

While there are plenty of tips to stay cool during summers there are few tips that should be avoided:

  • Avoid carbonated, aerated soft drinks as they do nothing good to your body. They are empty calories you don’t need. Go natural.
  • Keep caffeine and alcohol at bay. While you may love your morning coffee/tea but these may cause dehydration and induce hot flashes. You may try green tea or chamomile tea.
  • Go COOL and not COLD. Use ice wrapped in towel instead of simply ice.
  • Instead of ice cream try a wedge of watermelon.
  • If you have gone through chemo, try wearing a breathable cotton scarf instead of wigs.
  • If you decide to go for wigs make sure its light weight synthetic wig.

FRUITS TO THE RESCUE: EATING IT RIGHT

Cancer- this malicious evil needs to be eliminated from the society as soon as possible. The elimination is no rocket science instead it can be very well done by following the right procedure and maintaining a tactful routine. Fruits are said to be one of the most important constituent of our diet.
Tips that you need to follow:

1. Eating fruits on an empty stomach

Fruits detoxify your system, supply you with energy and also keep your weight in check. If not eaten on an empty stomach, the fruit will get mixed with the putrefying of other food and produce gas and hence making you all the more weak and unhealthy.

2. Drink only fresh fruit juices.

Stop having those aerated drinks and those tinned or packed food or fruit juices. Have fresh fruit juices instead of cooked fruits as they contain more vitamins. Though we would always suggest you to eat a whole fruit than drinking its juice.

3. Say No to cold water

Please avoid drinking cold water or drinks after a meal because it considerably slows down your digestion. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

Fruits that should be included in your regular diet:

KIWI :

Kiwi is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin C and E and fiber.

APPLE:

Apple has antioxidants and flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thus helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY :

Strawberry has the highest antioxidant power and protects the body from cancer-causing and blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE :

Orange helps in keeping cold away, lowers cholesterol, prevents & dissolves kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON :

Watermelon is packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which boosts our immune system.

GUAVA :

Guava is known for its high vitamin C content. Moreover, guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation.

PAPAYA :

Papaya is rich in Vitamin C and carotene which is good for your eyes.

Follow these simple and effective rules because they are your master keys toward leading a happier and stable life.

BEWARE:SPOOF ALERT!

Looks relatable?

At some point of time we all have come across these types of posts/messages either on Facebook or on WhatsApp or even through E-mail.
These unwanted messages can be disguised in any form such as spam, hoax or phishing messages.
A hoax is a deliberate creation of falsehood made to masquerade the truth. It can be made to sound truthful by using unfamiliar or exaggerated terms, such as the dihydrogen monoxide hoax  which was prevalent in the 1990’s. But it is nothing but our dear water (H2O).
One of the most recent hoax which spread like a wildfire was Earth being covered in perpetual darkness after Diwali or some kind of radiations being emitted by your phone on a particular day.
The main reason why these hoaxes are circulating among thousands of people is either the lack of scientific literacy or gullibility of social media users.
We all have to understand that spamming your friends and family will not help a sick or a missing child, for that matter, at least without any background checks. (Aka sympathy hoaxes)
Now, we all have heard the tiger and the shepherd story, how the villagers don’t help shepherd when he actually needs it because of the pranks he used to play on them.

Social media is a double-edged sword. Because of these kind of hoaxes people are reluctant to help those who are genuinely in need of it.

SYMPATHY HOAXES are one of the nastiest hoaxes I’ve come across.
Creators of these hoaxes use the pictures of sick or injured children, creating fake stories and then circulating it. Usually these come with captions saying on each like or share XYZ company will donate a certain amount of money to the child or simply 1 like= 1 prayer.

MOTIVE BEHIND THESE HOAXES:

  • Creation of these hoaxes are simply out of despicable mentalities for fun or to see how many likes or shares they get by fooling people around.
  • Sometimes it is used by spammers to gather valid E-mail addresses, using the fact that people normally forward mails in their circles without using BCC option.
It is pointless to share these messages as it is not helping anyone.

 HOW TO AVOID HOAXES:

Next time if you come across such types of posts/messages:
In case of Facebook: Firstly, report that particular post and DO NOT comment on the post as it would promote it further.
If you find your friends taking a ride of such posts let them know.
In case of WhatsApp: If the message is from an unknown number block it right away.
DO NOT open any business card sent to you by an unknown number unless you asked for it.
Restrain yourself from forwarding any message that asks you to forward it to other people urgently. Instead try to run a background check first by using Google or true caller, if you’re still unsure ignore it.
DO NOT believe any message claiming to have found a cure for a disease or any health remedies before consulting your health professional.
In case of E-mail: Delete them as soon as you receive these messages.
If any company or person (claiming to be an official employee of a company) asks you to provide sensitive or personal information such as your bank account no. or pin number do not fall prey to such traps, instead report to the concerned authorities.

On the other hand there are a few genuine cases which need our immediate concern and support. Many people post on social media pages to reach out to a large number of people. It is highly advisable to verify the information provided and its preferable to go for cases which are shared by trustworthy associations only.
Extending a helping hand to a person in need is highly appreciated but verifying the information and channeling help to the right individual is of great importance too!

THYROID- A PAIN IN THE NECK...!

Thyroid- How does it work?

Thyroid is one of the largest glands of the endocrine system. Located in the front lower part of the neck it has the ability to control the metabolism of the whole human body.
Thyroid conditions can be of two types- Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism based on the abnormal production of the thyroid hormone.
Hyperthyroidism is the one where there is an overproduction of the thyroid hormones. On the other hand Hypothyroidism is the one where the level of thyroid hormone production is low.

Hypothyroidism as a side effect of cancer treatment

  • The treatment of certain cancers like lymphoma generally includes radiations around the neck region. The radiation often causes damage to the hormone producing cells in the thyroid glands and thereby lowering the hormones production.
  • Certain medications involved in cancer treatment can also be responsible for the thyroid blues.
  • Thyroid complications can be commonly seen in patients who have undergone Bone marrow transplants as a long-term condition.

How do I know if I have thyroid abnormalities?

Hypothyroidism is an unpredictable syndrome. It can give grave discomfort or no trouble at all. Here are some tests which can be performed to correctly detect your thyroid abnormalities.

  • TSH Test- a simple blood test is all that is needed here. This test indicates the level of the thyroid hormones. These values can vary from person to person, in general the test reference values looks something like this:
              0.4- Normal
              2.5-at risk
              4.0-mild hypothyroidism
              10.0-hypothyroidism

Some symptoms of hypothyroidism

  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Difficulty in loosing weight or a sudden weight gain
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Slower heart rate

Hypothyroidism-A Diet Plan

Beware of the following!

  • Soy-Phytoestrogens present in Soy often lower the effect of the enzyme which initiates the production of thyroid hormones.

  • Iodine rich food supplements- In some cases iodine can be beneficial but iodine consumed n excess amount can hamper the hormone production.

  • Iron and calcium supplements- they can interfere with the effectiveness of some thyroid production enzymes and thus should be avoided.

  • Fiber rich food items- Though food items with high fiber content is recommended but if taken in huge amounts it can interfere with the absorption of the thyroid hormone by the body. Thus avoiding vegetable like cabbage, broccoli, spinach etc is advisable.

  • Caffeine, tobacco and alcohol consumption can even interfere with the effective action of the thyroid hormones.

Food items to go for!

  • Fruits and veggies rich in antioxidants- Blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers  rich in antioxidants can benefit the hormone producing capabilities of the thyroid gland

  • Selenium rich food items like sunflower seeds or basil nuts is highly beneficial for the proper functioning of the thyroid hormones.

  • Tyrosine supplements as recommended by the doctor is beneficial in proper  T3 and T4 production.
Few alternative treatments like including ayurvedic supplements in the diet can also help. Some plant extracts like ashwagandha, gotu kola, guggul are proven to be helpful. However, consulting a doctor before going for any of these is highly recommended
