What If?

A World Where You Have Cancer

You woke up one fine day, followed your mundane daily routine and went to your family doctor just for a routine checkup.

The doctor performs a blood test and he asks you to meet him at his office a couple of days later. He found something unusual in your blood report. As per Doctors instructions, you approach him and what he tells you changes your world.

‘It looks like blood cancer’…the doctor’s words hit you hard. Just one report has changed everything for you.

Your world is falling apart. Everyone knows about your cancer and people have started visiting you with sympathy and pity in their eyes to console you but nothing is helping you. People have a new topic to discuss about with themselves...and that topic is you.

You are lying in bed with reality haunting you with every passing second and thinking about your past. Where did you go wrong? Why did this happen to you?

You turn on your laptop and run a Google search on cancer. The following statistics appear in front of you-

  •  22% cancer cases are due to tobacco.
  •  10% cases are due to obesity, a poor diet, lack of physical activity, and
consumption of alcohol.
  • Other factors can be certain infection, exposure to ionizing radiation and environmental pollutants.
  •  In the developing world nearly 20% cases are due to infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and human papillomavirus (HPV).
  •  Approximately 5-10% of cancers are due to genetic defects inherited from a person’s parents.

You are trying to make sense of things.

Suddenly, you find someone calling your name and shaking you awake.

You hug your mother because you just came out of the worst nightmare of your life. But what happened in that dream can happen to you in real life too (and has happened to people)...can't it? You decide to never indulge in any kind of unhealthy habit and also vow to create awareness about cancer. You decide to:

  • Never smoke
  •  Maintain a healthy weight
  •  Not drink too much alcohol
  •  Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains
  •  Get vaccinated
  •  Not eat too much red meat
  • Avoid too much exposure to sunlight.
